Description
This hand carved feather of cedar has the warrior's face relief carved. Almost a sculpture by Jason Tomah Mi'kmaw. (Mikmaw is one Canadian spelling of MicMac -US spelling... Mi'kmaq is another Canadian spelling - All same tribe)At the top is the warriors face - with black painted hair and a cut out area behind his face. - The feather below the face has black painted spots and carved barbules which makes it look like an eagle's feather. Near the bottom are more painted spots and at very bottom is a howling wolf - black outlined. Wolf's head is imposed over an incised full moon - painted yellow.
The carved face at top is quite bold, imposing - magnificent. Hope to see more of this type of carving from Jason soon...
A Mi'kmaw friend suggests you may want to use one of Jason's carved eagle feathers like this for smudging, as non-Native Americans are not allowed to possess real eagle feathers. He performs traditional ceremonies and sometimes gives one of Jason Tomah's cedar feathers to non-Native participants. (if you aren't familiar with smudging - "ask seller a question" and I will respond with explanation.
This is 17.75" long and about 3" across at widest. - Beautifully carved and decorated! Jason also paints - I have offered a few of his paintings - They proved quite popular. I had also carried his carved cedar eagle feathers - which sold out a few years ago. Have not been able to get more of his work until recently. Happy to offer Jason Tomah carved cedar eagle feathers now!
Could use this as a hanging art work. Tightly wrap and tie around the quill end of the carved feather (use leather, yarn, ribbon, - whatever you think looks right) ... Jason hangs some of these from the quill end and attaches horse mane/tail hair - dyed red is traditional, or left natural. He glues these to the bottom of the back. You could also add a real feather/feathers, a tin cone w/dyed deer hair, a string of antique beads, or a string of small shells... .... Makes a nice hanging with or without additions. If you are using to smudge - do not add any thing to this piece.
