    Description

Polish Posters: Combat on Paper, 1960-1990 [Paperback] Fox, Frank (curator)
Amazing book of surreal Polish film / theatre / music / graphic arts posters in very good condition. Full bound, color illustrated wrappers; full page interior color poster illustrations; 48 pages.
Polish poster artists occupy a unique niche in the world of performance art signage and posters. Promotional movie, theater and musical artwork in Poland is well-known for its drastic departure from western-style posters. Artists such as Wiktor Gorka, Leszek Kebrowski, Waldemar Swierzy, Andrzej Pagowski, Jakub Erol, Michal Ksiazek, Miroslaw Lakomski, Wieslaw Walkuski, Eryk Lipinski, Marek Mosinski, Jan Lenica and many others adopted a signature surrealistic style in their executions that is far removed from what we know in the West. It is decidedly artist-centered rather than constrained by the dictates of movie studios. Beginning with Polish graphic art pioneers such as Tadeusz Gronowski and later Jerzy Flisak, these mavericks created works that are striking, shocking and often baffling to the casual observer. Indeed, the relative isolation of the Eastern Bloc had the unintentional salutary effect of encouraging homegrown art that is at once both astounding and refreshing. This book presents an exhibition of Polish posters spanning from 1960-1990 held at Katonah Museum of Art, Katonah, N.Y. in catalogue form. -Tom Walls, Foreign Affairs International
