We are delighted to offer this hand coiled Storyteller sculpture. Acoma is often referred to as "Sky City" because it is located atop a mesa in Western New Mexico. It is from there that this “The Storyteller” pottery was made, using local slate-like clay and designed with mineral and vegetable-base paint. This female storyteller, by Darlene Lee Vallo, with eight kids, is a bit of a caricature with exaggerated eyelashes; the children hang onto her, rapt with attention, listening to every word. This is the hallmark of Vallo’s work, great detail that is both captivating and engaging. One can easily imagine that the story is being told with great flare and imagination. This piece is without chips, cracks, breaks or repairs. It shows scuffs consistent with age. It is signed on the base by Darlene Lee Vallo. You may occasionally find Vallo’s pieces at the Territorial Indian Arts Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona.
