Model Totem Pole Hand-Carved Grizzly Bear Design Native American Art

Description

This is a classic Northwest Coast Native totem pole, small enough for the desk or bookshelf. It measures 12" x 4" x 4" and depicts a 'Grizzly Bear'. It has been hand-carved by Aboriginal artist Gino Seward, who is from Vancouver Island. Please note that each pole is made to order and may differ slightly in appearance from the images here. Gino Seward began carving at the age of ten, and has now been carving for over 20 years. He credits his grandfather, William Robertson, and his cousin, Jackson Robertson, with inspiring him to carve. Gino particularly enjoys carving in yellow cedar. He is known for his deep, detailed style.
The American black bear is common in the region. Grizzly bears live mainly in mountainous areas of the mainland, and one grizzly subspecies, the Alaskan brown bear, inhabits far northern regions. Bear is one of the most prevalent figures in crest and shamanic art, as well as in myths. It is considered to be a close relation of humankind, perhaps because of physical characteristics such as size, appearance, and expression, and behaviors such as standing on two hind legs, gathering plants and berries, fishing and nurturing young. As a close relation, the bear is a link between the human and non-human animal realms, as well as between the secular natural realm and the divine and supernatural. Because of their strength and fierceness, Bears are frequently the guardians, protectors and helping spirits of warriors. Bear is depicted with a wide mouth, lips and teeth (usually sharp, often displaying prominent fangs); a short, flat, broad snout; short squared ears; ovoid eyes; large, clawed feet ; little or no tail. The tongue is sometimes protruding, extending downward.
