Description

I have collected Native American art and jewelry since the 1970's.  I purchased this sculpture directly from Kathryn Yauney, Cherokee, in 1990. She did a series of these sculptures called ""Spirit Masks", many were limited editions some were originals, this is an original.  Capturing the spiritualism and mysticism of the Plains Indians is the primary focus behind Yauney's ceramic sculptures.  She strives to convey the Indian's history, the lore behind it and its excitement in all of her work.  She presents her vision of Indian culture using the materials they had used in their art.  Using clays from South Dakota and materials native to the plains area, Kathryn's mixed media works are truly unique.  As her visions take shape, a form in wet clay sets drying, waiting to be kiln fired for hardness.  Next comes three more firings to apply the colorful glazes and gold work.  Then comes the face painting and application of furs, quill and beadwork.
Clay, beads, porcupine quills, antlers, feathers, gold and brass pieces and furs, all intensify her images. The final result is a piece of artwork that portrays a proud culture.  Many of Kathryn's sculptures are one of a kind and she limits her editions to forty-five. Owning a Kathryn Yauney artwork is like owning a piece of history.
Never out of style, Southwest art is an investment in enjoyment to last a lifetime.
