Japanese TOGISHI sharpen a Japanese sword in this whetstone.
We are not finished in finish sharpenning unless we finish NAKATOGI (Pre finishing work) carefully.
Iyoto is good at to remove a rust and scratch.
Nakatogi means finaly sharpening of the last but one.
Generally speaking, NAKATOGI is the most important sharpening.
The scratch left by artificial stones is "V" gouge  section.
Natural left "U" gouge.
Artificial scratch is narrow but so deep.
Natural scratch is wide and shallow.
V is weak at stress and easy to chip.
U is strong  for  stress.
As you know at the end of slit of circle saw blade has round punching hole.
There is the same anti stress technique.
Because the sharpness lasts for a long time that finished by Natural!!
Wide and shallow scratch seems dirty ,but it is easy to remove.
V scratch seems smooth ,but it is hard to remove.
Then ,we must change the scratch shape in the medium  or  end of coarse grit stage.
Artifact is good at to gain abrasive power.
Diamond is the best!!.
Natural is good at to gain performance .
Coarse Iyo is the best entry grit of U gouge scratch stones.
Fine Iyo is the better finishing stones and the sharpness lasts for a long time.
Iyo slurry has electro power ,and it is consist of metal silicate.
It suspend iron particles very well.
And the grit is shrunken as well as you sharpen.
Iyo has so wide grit range ,suspend iron particles ,contain water well.
Because the slurry of Iyo is the best Nagura stones.
Let's rub and making slurry on the harder finish slate stones.
If you feel falling down  the abrasive  power ,rub with diamond plate or small Iyo stones.

I have been to Iyo-city in Ehime Jp to dig a Iyoto.
Iyoto could revive after an interval of 25 years.
We must maintain the great history of Iyoto with JP soul.
